EARTH SCIENCE 11
This course is intended to explore the multiple, complex, and
different aspects of sciences as they apply to our Earth. This includes; Geology – rocks and minerals,
volcanoes and earthquakes; Astronomy – the moon, the planets, and the stars;
Oceanography – oceans and tides; Plate Tectonics – the movement of land; and
the Earth’s History – from the Big Bang through to the dinosaurs and up to the
present. You’re going to expand your
thinking, your knowledge, and your grasp of the Earth and how it is a scientific
piece of work.
This course is designed for students with little, or no, science background. But you will need to have good work habits, good attendance, and a good attitude to be successful. Like any course, the more you put into the course, the more you will get out of it.
You will be learning using a variety of methods. You will be building your own knowledge, collecting and interpreting the information on your own, reading notes, visiting websites, watching videos, completing projects, and listening to me talk, among others. All of this will be done using multiple pieces of technology; computers & netbooks with the internet, iPads & applications, and good old-fashioned pen & paper.
Assignments will consist of (and not limited to); daily quizzes, unit tests, projects, and in-class assignments. Since there are five units, each unit will be weighted at 20% of your overall class mark. You will be relieved to know there is no in-class final exam.
