Space Exploration

Imagine you are a fish that has spent it's entire life living in a coral reef. If you and the others from the reef had the ability to swim away from the reef, you would have a limited amount of knowledge of what lay beyond the reef. Overtime you would become very knowledgable about the goings on of the behaviour and patterns that occur in your reef, even that of the night sky. Even with this knowledge and expertise, you would not be able to describe what occurs in the ocean beyond what would could see with your own eyes.

Earth is like a reef in the middle of the ocean, we are continuously looking for ways to explore and to learn about the universe and our place within it. As technology improves, so do our understandings of the universe's history and future.

There will be three areas of focus throughout this unit:
  1. Formation of the Universe: Scientific Evidence Suggest the Universe Formed About 13.7 Billion Years Ago
Here we will examine the formation of the universe and the Big Bang Theory (not the television show).

  2. Separated by Vast Distances: The Components of the Universe are Separated by Unimaginably Vast Distances
Focus will be based on distinguishing stars based on their characteristics. Furthermore, we will learn how to explain the formation of the solar system.

  3. Human Understanding of the Universe: Human Understanding of Earth and the Universe Continues to Increase Through Observation and Exploration
Within the section you will gain an understanding of the interrelationships of the Sun, Earth, and Moon within our system.

As always, these lessons are not meant to be completed in isolation.  Throughout the lessons you are encouraged to discuss with your peers in face-to-face discussions, sharing ideas within Google Documents, and through a variety of other methods.  This will allow myself and your fellow classmates to help you and others get through any roadblocks. You are also encouraged to reach out to others that you can discuss with and that you can learn from.
