Thermal Energy Drives Plate Tectonics
Did you know that we can learn a lot about Earth by examining the ocean floor?
The ocean floor provides scientist the opportunity to develop and to prove a variety of theories. We will be investigating Alfred Wegener's discovery of plate movement and his continental drift theory. About the common geological features across multiple continents that supported Wegener's theory about the break-up of the supercontinent Pangaea.
We will also be examining the energy transfer below the surface of the Earth that drives the movement of the tectonic plates around the Earth. In this section of the unit we will be reviewing converging, diverging, and transform plate boundaries. Furthermore, their impact on creating much of the Earth's topography as we see it today. These features will range from mountains, deep sea trenches, volcanoes, and earthquakes.
Buckle up we are in for a shaky ride!
