Forensics
With the ever growing popularity of crime shows and movies, the term forensics has become part of our everyday vocabulary. But, besides something to help solve murders and crime, what exactly is forensics? Forensics is the application of scientific methods and techniques to the investigation of crime (Oxford Dictionary, 2017). These methods must be suitable for the use in the court of law and must uphold high standards as to not contaminate the evidence.
Throughout this unit we will be placing an emphasis on forensic science. We will be examining the basic concepts of forensics and learning how it is used in connection with solving crime.
There will be three areas of focus throughout this unit:
1. An Introduction to Forensics:
Within this section we will be learning about forensic terminology and areas of specialty in forensics. We will also begin to examine a Crime Scene Investigation, to ensure that when we step into the field we will be able to conduct a thorough examination of the evidence that will me admissible in the court of law.
2. At the Lab:
Once all of the physical evidence has been collected from the crime scene, it is time for it to be sent to the lab for further analysis. It is in the lab that forensic scientists come to be. Within this section we will be introduced to some of the techniques and the methods forensic scientists use in effort to help some a crime.
3. Establishing Identities:
Even with proper techniques and care taken during the collection of the evidence at the scene and the analysis of the evidence at the lab, it can prove to be a challenge to identify the people involved in an ongoing investigation. Throughout this section we will be learning how to identify the people involved, the victims, suspects, or perhaps even a possible witness. A variety of techniques can be used to determine the identification of people, fingerprints, DNA, teeth marks, and bone structure.
As always, these lessons are not meant to be completed in isolation; we will be working along side each other, our fellow investigators. As in the past, we will continue to use our GoogleClassroom and GoogleDocs, along with some Padlets, and maybe even some good 'ole lined paper.
